WPF Feature Suggestions

Welcome to the WPF feature suggestion forum. Please vote or submit a feature request. If it is not a product feature request it might be moderated.

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can vote and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can vote on it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Implement a pre-unload event in ObservableCollection or in ItemsControl

14.Some kind of pre-unload event. E.g., if an object is removed from an ObservableCollection, make it as easy to play an Unloaded storyboard as it is for a Loaded storyboard. Perhaps it's specific to the item containers of an ItemsControl.

    • Auto-generate ViewModel interface from {Binding} expressions

Have the XAML designer automatically generate an interface for the ViewModel based on the Binding expressions in the XAML. This would give the MVVM pattern better type-safety and eliminate data binding errors.

      • include DockingManager, Windows selector and most of the VStudio goodies in standard WPF feature set

Share some of excellent VS 2010 UI blocks (Docking manager, Windowss selector maybe Architecture Explorer like a graphing helper)
thus saving time for good people for more high-level tasks and stop overflow of VS-imitating low-quality 3rd party libraries

I really wished that WPF had the child usercontrol template like in sliverlight

            • Make BringIntoView work correctly with UI virtualization

BringIntoView does not work correctly with user interfaces that are virtualized. A great example is the TreeView. Calling BringIntoView on an item that is not currently on screen will not bring the item into view because it hasn't been drawn yet even though its model exists. The only way to get around this today is through hacks such as : http://lucisferre.net/2010/04/21/virtualizing-stack-panel-wpf-part-duex/

              and

              • Complex Unicode supports!

As far I know, WPF and Silverlight don't support complex unicode just yet.
Khmer Unicode is one of the complex unicode system, so I suggest WPF, also Silverlight Should.

                  • Promote it better, it is a great technology with so much to offer. If it needs to be replaced by WinRt, then WinRt should do desktop too

Please improve the appearance of consistency and stability in your technology stacks... Please back your great ideas...

                      • Update Invisible items

A major problem I've stumbled against again again is that it's not possible to update elements of a Panel/Window that's not visible (except with some rather ugly hacks).

Many times you want to prepare a view before displaying it to prevent ugly flickering when showing it, especially if you're reusing the same Window/Panel.

It would be nice to have a way to force a visual to update itself, even when it's not visible

                          • XAML text substitution templates

Two controls. Nearly identical default styles, but one small bit deep inside is different. Solution today? Clone the entire block of XAML for both controls. I'd like some way to say <{TAG} /> and have {TAG} get filled in by "BasedOn" XAML (so ctrl X would say BasedOn Y style and then supply the text to use in place of {TAG}).

Allowing for pre and post compile weaving allows for flexibility instead of always requiring a proxy for auto INPC support.

                              • Extract and edit template from system control like in Expression Blend

In MS Expression you can select a control->Edit template->Make a copy and have the xaml that is used for the base control.
This feature should be implemented in Visual Studio as well.

                                  • Add Padding property to Panels

Add the Padding property to panels like Grid, StackPanel, WrapPanel, also to ColumnDefinition and RowDefinition.
Without it, to obtain similar effect you have to set Margin for every single control inside the panel, and styles are not an option because first and last child of a row or column have different margin (margin is added). What if you need to change the margin afterwards? You have to go child by child editing the Margin property of every child control, this is not good maintainability which is one of the goals of the new layout system of WPF.

                                    • Allow silverlight dlls to be used directly in WPF

When I create a DLL in silverlight with controls, pages, etc., it would be very very nice to be able to use them directly within WPF instead of having to cross compile them.

                                      • Make the DataGrid at least as fast as the WinForms DataGridView

The WPF DataGrid is useseless for showing more than 1-2K rows. It is either slow and jumpy when virtualizing or eats gigabytes of RAM when not virtualizing.

Meanwhile the WinForms DataGridView displays upwards of 100K rows without breaking a sweat...
