NOW CLOSED: WPF Feature Suggestions

PLEASE READ!!!!!

This UserVoice forum is now closed. For all new WPF feature requests, please use the Windows Presentation Foundation category in the Visual Studio UserVoice

The ideas on this site have been already migrated over to the new location!

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Simple peer-to-peer communications between 2 WPF Programs.

    Build some WPF Classes to facilitate extremely simple peer-to-peer communications between two WPF programs running on different computers. Target "Generic HID: over USB, Bluetooth peer-to-peer, and finally, Direct WiFi peer-to-peer.
    In fact, you could bundle all three types of connections into a single class. It could consist of 4 simple functions:
    Handle = Open_Connection(Unique_ID, Connection_Type(USB_Hid| | BlueThooth | Direct_Wifi);
    ReturnCode = Send_Message(Handle, message, messagelength);
    ReturnCode = Receive_Message(Handle, message, messagelength);
    Close(Handle);
    The whole idea is to give programmers lots of power without having them deal with tons of complexity.

      • Make XmlnsDefinition work inside the same assembly

        I can define XmlnsDefinitions to group my different namespaces from one assembly:

        MyLibrary.dll
        -> [assembly: XmlnsDefinition("myXamlNameSpace","My.Clr.Namespace")]
        -> [assembly: XmlnsDefinition("myXamlNameSpace","My.Other.Clr.Namespace")]

        and use it from ANOTHER assembly:

        <Window xmlns="....."
        xmlns:my="myXamlNamespace"
        .... />

        However, this doesn't work within the SAME assembly where the XmlnsAttributes are defined.

            • Improve Locale Management

              Managing multiple languages and Locales in WPF is nothing short of a nightmare... Please at least make it as straightforward as WinForms with similar tools. The learning curve is too steep in that regard, and having to tag/rename each and every control and map it to an external file is absolutely unacceptable.

                    • Using C# expressions in WPF bindings

                      Consider that my ViewModel has the IsBusy propery. It was great if I was able to do binding like this:

                      <ProgressBar Visiblity="{Binding IsBusy}" ... />
                      <Button Visiblity="{Binding !IsBusy}" .../>

                      Note that I've bound Button's visibility to !IsBusy (Not Busy).

                      I used to have this on JavaScript MVVM frameworks like knockout.

                      The expression could be more complex like:

                      <Button Text="IsBusy && !HasError ? true : false"/>

                      Currently I should use ValueConverters for this which is hard to create, for each type of binding required.

                      • Update the desktop guidelines

                        The current UX guidelines for the desktop hark back to 2010, and are quite dated. The UX guidelines for Modern UI are quite good, but there is no clear direction on what/where UX should be going on the desktop itself.

                        • Metro style for WPF (Touchable Controls)

                          Win8 Desktop has WON THE WAR to Windows RT! On tablets and desktops!
                          But touch devices are the future (ON DESKTOP too, although somebody NOT WANT!)
                          WPF controls need to adapt to touchable devices and... merge with Windows Store Apps and WP81!!!

                            • Promote it better, it is a great technology with so much to offer. If it needs to be replaced by WinRt, then WinRt should do desktop too

                              Please improve the appearance of consistency and stability in your technology stacks... Please back your great ideas...

                                • Make Stroke or Touch related event ignore Mouse event

                                  I use InkCanvas and it does not ignore Mouse event during touch or stroke related event. I have to kill mouse device by editing registry, what a hack! So, I'd like to ignore Mouse related event on stroke treatment.

                                      • Nice and customisable controls with touch support

                                        Everyone needs to show data to users in a nice way. I think WPF lacks enough basic controls with touch support, e.g.:
                                        ScrollViewer with fancy finger scrolling and GPU acceleration
                                        StackPanel with item drang&drop sorting
                                        ScrollViewer with 3D scrolling and GPU acceleration
                                        etc.

                                        I think, Surface controls are pretty nice but we need more. SurfaceScrollViewer is the best in Surface controls but verry buggy (too many times I scroll down and the result is that I am still at the same position). Also we need to control scrolling animation length and scrolling velocity.

                                        Simplified: We need fancy customisable controls smartphones-like.
