NOW CLOSED: WPF Feature Suggestions

PLEASE READ!!!!!

This UserVoice forum is now closed. For all new WPF feature requests, please use the Windows Presentation Foundation category in the Visual Studio UserVoice

The ideas on this site have been already migrated over to the new location!

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Completely rework the RichTextBox control (make it fast, extensible, capable of handling large text)

    - fast to initialize and load
    - stellar performance (this is the most important part)
    - able to handle large amounts of rich-text
    - provide an auto-size feature
    - better support for spell checking
    - either add support for image editing, bullet points and tables or make it extensible so we can implement it ourselves

    I imagine a lot can be taken from the VS2010 editor or AvalonEdit.

    • Allow setting Binding.ConverterParameter to another Binding.

      It's impossible to provide the ConverterParameter of a Binding with another Binding.
      You must create a MultiBinding.

      • Expander.ButtonStyle that applies to the toggle button only

        In this way I don't have to write so much code if I want to set the tooltip of the toggle button or it's template.
        Take a look here to understand what I mean: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/250788/how-to-modify-expander-button-background-only-wpf

        • Change binding before control is loaded

          Currently, it is not possible to change a binding or datacontext before a control is loaded. Therefore, you will have to wait until the control is loaded (and handle a lot of binding errors), and then replace the binding or datacontext value.

          • Add higher level object to draw text inside GeometryDrawing

            Currently if text is drawn inside GeometryDrawing a GlyphRun need to be used - but it is too low lever with GlyphIndices, AdvanceWidths and GlyphTypeface properties. The used font is defined in GlyphTypeface where the absolute path to the font file needs to be specified (file:///C:/WINDOWS/FONTS/segoeui.ttf). The GlyphTypeface makes the xaml non-portable from one computer to another.

            There should be at least a FontFamily property on GlyphRun.

                • Make WPF Designer as good as WinForms

                  Before adding new features to WPF I'd like to see WPF Designed ("Cider") support to be as good, mature and feature complete as the WinForms designer. For example, creating ToolBars in WPF is practically impossible using the Designer. Also creating simple image buttons requires a lot of manual steps for adding mouse over effects and drawing disabled images.

                  • TabItem.ToolTip should only affect the Header, not the content.

                    When you set TabItem.ToolTip, the tooltip is visible in the entire tab along its content.
                    This should be fixed, and the tooltip should be visible for the header only which makes much more sense.

                    • Restrict Behavior visibility

                      When I define a System.Windows.Interactivity.Behavior<T> for e.g. an ItemsControl, like

                      public class SomeAwesomaticBehavior : Behavior<ItemsControl>
                      {
                      }

                      it will appear in Visual Studio's XAML editor (and probably in the Designer too) even for ordinary, non-Items-Controls and throw nasty runtime exceptions. This is contrary to Attached Properties which will appear only for intended types.

                      The designer and the XAML editor must be updated to respect a behavior's scope. Because it surely does confuse co-workers and designer folks when a lot of Behaviors pop up that don't have anything to do with the current object.

                      • Better performance for data templates

                        Would be great if data templates or visual tree compression or enhancements can be made when applying the data template.

                        It would be good if when a data template is applied runtime optimisations can be made or compile time ones, so that visual tree is compressed and improved, to save on memory, rather than having to discourage developers to keep data templates simple.

                            • Datagrid mode to allow cell data (full/part) selection for clipboard copy not in edit mode.

                              When displaying data in a datagrid, we need an option to land in a cell, mark the text within the cell and be able to copy it, without having to be in any edit mode to do so. The selection mode should be able to remain row selection, we need to be able to deal with selecting data inside the cell independently from the row/multi cell selection options.
                              This option also needs to be available on textboxes in general, so that a read only user can copy appearance data out of fields to the clipboard.

                              • Enhance Window class to support IDropTarget shell file openeing

                                In Windows, the preferred interaction for opening files from Windows Explorer is via IDropTarget (see Raymond Chen's blog). System.Windows.Window or Application class should have a ready hook into this mechanism. As it is we must all roll our own IDropTarget interop.

                                      • Add CurrentState property to MediaElement

                                        The property should be available to check the current state of MediaElement. In Silverlight it uses the MediaElementState enumeration. Also expose event fired that the state changes.
