WPF Feature Suggestions

Welcome to the WPF feature suggestion forum. Please vote or submit a feature request. If it is not a product feature request it might be moderated.

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can vote and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can vote on it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. XAML Based Shaders

While WPF now supports effects, the method of creating them and integrating them into the app is a bit of a pain. It would be better if you could create HLSL directly in XAML. Plus, could we have support for triggers and binding in shaders?

      • VideoRendererElement for integration of DirectShow and Media Foundation

The VideoRendererElement could provide a renderer filter (DirectShow) or a media sink (MF) or an activation object (IMFActivate). You could use that in your DirectShow filter graph or MF topology.
At the moment, the possibilities for using DirectShow/MF in a WPF application are dissatisfying: you can use a native window for video rendering (with all the airspace issues), you can use the combination of an EVR custom presenter and a D3DImage (it is awkward and uses the UI thread for updating the video image), and of course you can use MediaElement with all its limitations (video playback only).
        We badly…

        • Add designer attribute in Xaml for DataContext type

It'd be nice to be able to specify an x:Type for the designer to use when dealing with a DataContext, for use with DataTemplates and ViewModel-first MVVM. This would potentially allow intellisense to work when using VM-first style MVVM development.

            • Validation with DataAnnotations like in ASP.NET MVC.

Also make Entity-Framework fully compatible and integrated with DataAnnotations validation.

              • Better custom chrome support for Window

It's without a doubt that custom chrome apps are becoming popular, with office as being a leader, and other MS apps.

It would be great if full support was baked into the window, I am speaking in terms of:

                - Better drop shadow support for borderless windows
                - Retaining animation for minimizing, maximizing windows
                - Aero snap support
                - Fixing issues when WindowStyle is none and maximizing causing it to be in Kiosk mode.
                - Inherent and native support for extending glass into non client area.

There are far too much hacking, pinvoking to be done just to achieve these…

                • Add IsolatedStorageSettings (System.IO.IsolatedStorage.IsolatedStorageSettings) to WPF

In Silverlight you have the wonderful IsolatedStorageSettings class that allows you to save any kind of object (including sub-objects) in isolated storage.

                  For instance: IsolatedStorageSettings.ApplicationSettings["LastRun"] = DateTime.Now;

Please add that to WPF as well; maybe also with different visibilites like "Application", "User", "Machine".

                    • Make TemplateBinding work in a multibinding

TemplateBinding doesn't inherit from BindingBase which means you can't use it in a MultiBinding.

                      • Lazy initialization of dependency properties

Currently there's no easy way to initialize a dependency property lazily. This is a real issue for collection DPs, because they have to be explicitly created in XAML. I want to be able to specify a "InitCallback" delegate in the property metadata

                          • implement live data shaping

When a row is added or property changes an entire re-sort or re-group has to be applied to the collection. Ideally data would be shaped into the sorted/grouped format on the fly.

                            • Native support for video capture and video streaming.

It would be nice to have the ability to support a Video capture device natively. Currently you have to jump through a lot of hoops to get this running via DirectShow interop or MediaPlayer ActiveX. I'm thinking of applications like Media players, PVR/DVR functionality, broadcast, etc that can be manipulated in WPF 3D and transforms.

                                • Make the WPF Ribbon look closer to the Windows Ribbon

The current WPF ribbon is not too realistic... The application button is not the right color, nor is the ribbon tab the right gradient. There are some necessary animations not done, while there are animations not found in the Windows Ribbon. The buttons in the ribbon control group do not look similar to the Windows Ribbon buttons at all. I suggest that the WPF Ribbon be made more realistic before any additional development is done.

                                  • fix combobox dropdown z-index when using a shaped window

Right now, when you use a "shaped window" set window transperancy to true, windows style to none, etc... And you place a combobox on the page, and run it. When you select the combo-box, the drop down select box appears BEHIND the window. this needs to be fixed

                                    • Make bicubic scaler available in WPF

I want to be able to do
                                      <Image RenderOptions.BitmapScalingMode="Bicubic" />
The Fant scaler is prone to artifacts that are not suitable for my biomedical imaging application.
WIC supports bicubic scaling on its IWICBitmapScaler interface, upon which WPF is built.
Please expose bicubic scaling in WPF's TransformedBitmap and RenderOptions.BitmapScalingMode so I don't have to roll my own Image class and access WIC directly.

                                      • Implement a pre-unload event in ObservableCollection or in ItemsControl

14.Some kind of pre-unload event. E.g., if an object is removed from an ObservableCollection, make it as easy to play an Unloaded storyboard as it is for a Loaded storyboard. Perhaps it's specific to the item containers of an ItemsControl.

                                        • Auto-generate ViewModel interface from {Binding} expressions

Have the XAML designer automatically generate an interface for the ViewModel based on the Binding expressions in the XAML. This would give the MVVM pattern better type-safety and eliminate data binding errors.
